Questions people actually ask.
What is Cyber Whatnot?
A small stickers-and-apparel brand for people into security and hacker culture — the kind of gear you'd wear to a con or slap on a laptop. Proceeds go toward supporting the community around local BSides events and DEF CON.
Where does the money actually go?
Sponsorships for local BSides conferences, and covering DEF CON badges and airfare for people who need help getting there. It's not a fixed formula — it depends on what the store brings in.
How much of each sale goes to giving back?
Honestly, we're not putting a locked-in percentage here yet. This is a side project, run by someone with a day job, not a company with a marketing team. What we give depends on what we sell — we'd rather under-promise and actually deliver than post a number we can't back up.
How do I ask for event or badge support?
Email hello@cyberwhatnot.com with what you're asking for — a BSides sponsorship, a badge, help with airfare — and any details that'd help us understand the impact. We read everything. We can't promise a yes, since it depends on what the store's brought in, but every request gets a real reply.
I made a cool, related design — can you sell it?
Possibly — we're open to it. If your design fits the hacker/infosec-culture vibe, email hello@cyberwhatnot.com with the concept. There's no formal program yet: we'd figure out a fair revenue share with you directly, and proceeds would still count toward the BSides/DEF CON support we do. No guarantees we'll say yes, but we'd love to see what you've got.
Is Cyber Whatnot a registered nonprofit?
No. Cyber Whatnot is a for-profit merch brand, not a registered charity or 501(c)(3). Giving back comes out of store proceeds because it matters to us, not because of any tax or legal structure — which also means purchases and any support we give aren't tax-deductible donations.
Where can I see what events you've supported?
Nowhere yet, honestly — we just launched, and there's no revenue to give back until the store starts selling. Once there's a track record, this is where we'll list the BSides events sponsored and badges funded, so it stays real and checkable instead of just a promise.
